There is no statewide Indiana programme that hands out free gas cards. Fuel help in Indiana comes from local Community Action Agencies, churches and ministries, county welfare offices where the trip is work-related, and Medicaid transport for medical appointments. Start by calling 2-1-1 and asking for gas vouchers by name.

Indiana cash assistance is called Indiana TANF — ask for diversionary assistance, emergency assistance or supportive services.

Your township trustee — Indiana’s best fuel route

Around 1,000 township trustees across Indiana administer statutory township assistance. It is the most accessible government fuel help in the state and almost nobody writes about it.

How it works
Form of helpVouchers only, never cash, paid directly to the vendor
Where to applyThe township where you live. Find your trustee through the county clerk or in.gov/townships
DocumentsPhoto ID for all household members, proof of township residency, 30 days of all household income, recent bank statements, and the bill or notice
DecisionSome townships issue a written decision within 72 hours; denials come with written appeal rights
Last-resort ruleYou must first try other agencies and family members
November to MaySome townships require you to apply for Energy Assistance first
AppointmentsMost require an intake appointment; emergencies may be handled same-day

Why this is worth the paperwork

Unlike charity, township assistance is a statutory entitlement with a formal decision and an appeal right. If you are refused, you are told why in writing and can challenge it — which is not true of any church or charity fund.

Indiana’s TANF programme is administered by the Family and Social Services Administration.

Community Action Agencies in Indiana

These are the most flexible funders in the state. CSBG rules let them respond to individual circumstances rather than apply a fixed formula, and unlike LIHEAP they are not restricted to energy bills. Your state association can tell you which agency covers your county:

Ask for the right thing

Say “transportation assistance” or “fuel for my vehicle”. Saying “energy assistance” or “help with gas” will route you to the home heating programme.

Cash assistance and work supports in Indiana

Indiana’s TANF programme is Indiana TANF. If the trip is for a job, an interview or training, ask your local human services or social services office about:

  • Diversionary assistance — a one-off payment to clear a barrier to work
  • Emergency assistance — crisis cash, sometimes available whether or not you already receive TANF
  • Supportive services — vouchers tied to participation in the state work programme

Programme names are re-branded from time to time, so confirm the current name with the state agency. More on TANF work supports

Medical travel in Indiana

If the trip is to a medical appointment, Medicaid non-emergency medical transportation is a mandatory benefit and can pay mileage or issue gas vouchers when you have a car but cannot fuel it. Call the transport number on the back of your card before the appointment — prior authorisation is required in several states. If you are in hospital treatment, ask for a medical social worker, who is the person who holds patient-assistance gas cards.

This is where same-day help lives. St. Vincent de Paul conferences and FISH or local emergency ministries appear more often than any other provider in gas voucher directories. Expect around $25, a short form, and copies of your bills. How to ask a church

What is Indiana township assistance?

It is statutory poor relief administered by around 1,000 township trustees across the state. Help is issued as vouchers paid directly to a vendor rather than as cash, and it can cover transportation. How do I find my Indiana township trustee?

Apply in the township where you live, and find your trustee through your county clerk's office or at in.gov/townships. Call to schedule an intake appointment rather than turning up.
